A family that runs, bikes, and swims together stays healthy forever.
This is the Sacris family motto as they prepare to compete in the upcoming Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines this Sunday.
Andrei Sacris, the eldest among the Sacris siblings, said that five of their family members will be joining the challenge.
“I will be joining, my brother, my dad, my uncle and my aunt. Basically, our family is a team,” he said.
Andrei said their family started joining triathlons in 2012.
“My dad and my brother started around 2012, while me, my uncle and aunt started our very first triathlon last September 2014,” he said.
Andrei said they have been joining a lot of triathlons here in Cebu in preparation for the upcoming Ironman challenge.
“Ironman is one of the most awaited events this year,” he said.
MINI REUNION
Andrei admitted that joining the Ironman challenge brought their family closer.
“We were not so close back then. The funny story here is that my brother and I weren’t so close with my uncle and we were scared of him. But now, we have something we could relate on,” he said, noting that both his brother and him are now comfortable with their uncle.
“I don’t think there are triathletes who enjoy being alone. They will always look for a second family. A team for that matter,” he said.
Since half of the family will be there to support them, Andrei said race day will also be like a mini reunion for them, which he enjoys so much.
Sacris also bared that his seven-year-old cousin will be competing in the Ironkids event on Saturday. It will be his first time to join.
“It is a big event for our family,” he said.
Aside from a good bonding activity for the family, Andrei said the race also helps them health wise.
He said some of their family members have kidney and gallstones problems, which is why they strive for healthy living. For them, joining the triathlon is one way of achieving that goal. / Mary Claire U. Catado, UP Cebu Intern
