Woman takes on Duranos

Who’s afraid of the Duranos of Danao city who have controlled the district since the 1950s?

A 76-year-old female challenger has  stepped up, saying it’s time to put an end to the Durano “dynasty”.

Virgina Wagas Velasco, aunt of former Compostela Mayor Richie Wagas, filed her COC for 5th district representative just before noon yesterday at the Comelec provincial office.

It’s her first time to run for public office.  She was director of  the Cebu II Electric Cooperative (Cebeco II) from 2009 to 2012.

“I have decided to run because at my age, I want to be part of history to push for the elimination of the Durano dynasty,” she told reporters.

She’s aware of the odds.   The Duranos have been controlling the district since the 1950s.

“God will lead me,” said the senior citizen.

“I am depending on God’s power and infinite mercy. I know He will lead me and guide me,” said Velasco.

The 5th  district includes Danao City and the towns of Borbon, Sogod, Catmon, Carmen, Compostela and Liloan in the mainland and the towns of Pilar, Tudela, Poro and San Franciso in Camotes Islands.

Rep. Ace Durano will not be seeking reelection after 2016.  His  elder brother Red is running for his post next year.
