THE University of the East (UE) Red Warriors stayed in contention for a spot in the Final Four as they took down the University of Santo Tomas (USt) Growling Tigers in stunning fashion, 91-77, in the 78th UAAP men’s basketball competition yesterday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Clark Derige towed the Red Warriors to their fourth victory in 11 games by scoring nine of his 26 points in the final frame to keep the Tigers at bay. More importantly, UE now finds itself within striking distance of both La Salle and National University who stand at 5-6 and 5-7, respectively.
Chris Javier scored 13 while Nick Abanto and Paul Varilla added 10 each.
UST was gunning for a win that would secure them a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four but instead lost and slipped to 9-3. The loss also spoiled the monster performance of Karim Abdul who had 25 points and 15 boards. UST’s local stars, Ed Daquioag and Kevin Ferrer, were held down to subpar numbers of 11 and 10, respectively.
