THE barangay treasurer of Kamputhaw, Cebu City is facing a court trial for allegedly misappropriating about half-a-million pesos.

The Office of the Ombudsman in the Visayas indicted  Ma. Rosario Palma for malversation of public funds.

Palma  incurred a cash shortage in unremitted barangay collections in the amount of P534,503.24.

In January. 2011, the Commission on Audit sent a demand letter to Palma, requiring her to immediately produce the cash shortage.

Palma said that she used the barangay collections to buy groceries for vigil wakes, snacks for official meetings, food to be stored in the office of former barangay captain Lorenzo Basamot and fuel for barangay vehicles, among others.  However, Palma failed to present evidence to prove her claim.
