FIFTEEN buckets of assorted fish were confiscated last Saturday after a commercial fishing boat was apprehended illegally fishing in the Tañon Strait off the seawaters of Tuburan town in northwestern Cebu.

FB Genevieve was apprehended with its boat captain Amado Segovia and 14 crew members after they were fishing in the strait, which is a marine-protected area between Negros and Cebu.

The commercial fishing boat was allegedly owned by John Go.

Police caught the fishermen using active gear and fine mesh net to catch fish at the Kamingawan Shoal in the Tañon Strait. They were able to catch 15 buckets of fish estimated to be worth at least P15,000.

The boat captain couldn’t produce documents that will allow them to fish in the protected waters.

The apprehended fishermen are currently detained at the Tuburan police station pending the filing of charges.

Their fishing boat is docked at the Tuburan wharf under the custody of the police.

The Tañon Strait, which is 27 km long and 500 m deep has been known as a migration corridors for whales, dolphins and other marine mammals.
