DESPITE being preventively suspended, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama is still a busy man.
He spent his Sunday attending the opening event of an exhibit for the 25th anniversary of the Lumad Basakanons at Shopwise Mall in Basak.
He also went visiting different activities in the city’s barangays.
“(Now that I’m suspended) the more events there are. Ang nakabintaha lang, di na ko kailangan mo-attend og office sa City Hall (The advantage is that I don’t need to report to office at City Hall),” Rama said in a telephone interview yesterday.
Rama said he was invited by Basak San Nicolas barangay captain Norman Navarro to the ribbon cutting of an exhibit by the Lumad Basakanons who are celebrating their 25th anniversary as a group at Shopwise yesterday.
The Ramas, especially the late former Basak San Nicolas barangay captain George Rama, has been instrumental in forming the group. The Lumad Basakanons, which was formed and managed by the Navarros, have been reaping awards in the annual Sinulog Grand Parade.
Rama delivered a speech at the event although he wasn’t able to join the ribbon cutting since he had to rush to attend a Christmas party in barangay Guba.
“I have assured them that even if I’m an SM, or suspended mayor, if they will again be competitive at the Sinulog level, I will always assure them that I will be with them as head of the Sinulog Foundation,” he said.
Rama earlier said he will continue to be active in next year’s Sinulog as the chairman of the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI).
He said he assured the Lumad Basakanons yesterday that the foundation will continue to support the group especially in its participation to the nationwide Aliwan Festival if they also prove to be competitive in the local Sinulog.
“Reaching 25 years is an achievement. It’s promotion of culture in the ways they innovate, the way they do some transformation and reaching not just local competitiveness, not just national competitiveness. By the way they transition, the way they move even without props is globally competitive in their presentation,” Rama said.
The Lumad Basakanons has been known for their quick and flawless choreography as well as the introduction of new trends in the dance competition.
Rama said the group’s exhibit in Shopwise include their recognitions and trophies, photos and costumes among others.
After the party in Guba, Rama said he also visited some home owners in barangay Apas near GMA 7.
Later in the evening, he said he was on his way to Pardo to attend an activity he was invited to.
