Fast craft returned to port due to high waves

Two fast craft that sailed from Pier 3 in Cebu City returned to the port after being forced back by huge waves.

Ship captains of Weesam and MV Bariquel that were both bound for Ormoc, returned to port, acting Philippine Coast Guard-Cebu station commander Rodolfo Villajuan said.

He said Weesam left at 5:30 a.m. but returned in less than an hour while MV Bariquel departed 20 minutes earlier but but returned immediately as well.

Weesam canceled its Ormoc-bound trip for today, while MV Bariquel is still waiting on the weather’s progress.

Both fast craft arranged refunds for their passengers.

Vessels like the Beautiful Stars going to Hilongos, Leyte, Ocean Jet 9 heading to Tagbilaran and all fast craft in Santander, Cebu-Dumaguete were canceled due to the inclement weather.

Coast Guard commander William Melad said it is up to the companies to decide based on the safety of their passengers. Light to moderate, and occasionally heavy rains were experienced today and this will persist until January 16, Thursday based on Pagasa’s five-day weather outlook.

Flooding is possible in low lying areas and land slides in mountainous areas./ with reports from Correspondent Michelle Padayhag
