AFTER A lengthy hiatus, Cebu’s most successful amateur commercial basketball squad – the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños – will be springing back into action as it competes in the upcoming Country Wide Basketball League which will open next month.

This was confirmed to Cebu Daily News in a talk with the team’s long-time and multi-titled head coach, Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba on Monday evening.

The veteran bench tactician said that he has already spoken with M. Lhuillier officials, who gave him the green light to form the squad.

Because of this, the team will be staging an open tryout starting on January 19, 8 a.m. at the Aznar Coliseum. Alcoseba indicated that he is looking to shore up a lineup that already boasts of the core of the former Cesafi champions, Southwestern University Cobras.

Slated to suit up for the Niños this time around are two-time Cesafi MVP Mark Jayven Tallo, Jun Luz, Daryl Goloran, Jan Auditor, among others. Alcoseba said he is looking to add seven more players.

The CWBL is the brainchild of the people behind the Philippine Collegiate Champions League, namely Atty. Rey Gamboa and coaching great Joe Lipa. The league is focusing on giving players who are caught in between college and the higher leagues the exposure they need to possibly make it to the next level.

Initially, Alcoseba and another basketball patron, successful businessman Joe Soberano, were thought to be pairing up to form a powerhouse squad for this particular competition.

MLKP last participated in the defunct Liga Pilipinas where they bagged three titles.
