Baby kidnapping suspect still in jail

SHE may have been forgiven, but Melissa Londres, the suspect in the kidnapping of an infant, won’t be leaving jail anytime soon.

Londres’s boyfriend Winfred Almeria, however, was released from detention yesterday after the city prosecutor found no basis to indict him in the January 4 kidnapping.

Senior Supt. Marlon Tayaba, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Management Group Central Visayas (CIDG-7), said the affidavit of desistance that the baby’s parents signed still has to be reviewed by the city prosecutor.

“Londres will stay in detention,” Tayaba said in a phone interview. Londres posed as a nurse and stole the baby from his mother at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center last January 4.

Couple Jonathan and Jayvee Celadenia, parents of the abducted baby, signed at the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office last Tuesday an affidavit of desistance indicating they didn’t want to pursue the case against Londres.

The couple dropped the case out of pity for Londres’s mother, who went to their house and begged them to forgive her daughter.

“The desistance may or may not be considered. It is always subject to evaluation, assessment, review, and approval,” said Fiscal Maria Luisa Ratilla, officer-in-charge of the Cebu City Prosecutor’s Office.

Tayaba said they have a strong criminal case for kidnapping against Londres.

“She might be transferred to Kalunasan (Cebu City jail) tomorrow (today),” he said.
