HIS campaign against illegal drugs may have led to the ambush attempt on Basak barangay captain Isabelito Darnayla, 53, in Lapu-Lapu City last Saturday.

Senior Supt. Rey Lawas, Police Regional Office chief of staff, said Darnayla told police that before the incident, he called the attention of a drug peddler asking him to stop his illegal trade.

Lawas refused to name names because of the ongoing investigation.

Police were also looking into Darnayla’s reprimanding of tricycle drivers in Sitio Iba for parking their tricycles along the road as a possible motive in the attack.

Police also identified Monick Saumay as the owner of the abandoned tricycle whom police found near the crime scene.

Relatives however told police that Saumay was in Lanao del Norte.

Police were still trying to trace who used the tricycle at the time of the crime.

Barangay captain Darnayla was driving his Ford Ranger along General Aviation Road when he was ambushed. He survived the attack and is recuperating at a hospital.
