Expansion teams Mahindra, Blackwater face tough foes
Games today:
Ynares Center, Antipolo City
4:15 p.m.- Blackwater vs. San Miguel Beer
7:00 p.m.- Mahindra vs. Barangay Ginebra
Sister teams San Miguel Beermen and Barangay Ginebra Kings take on separate expansion squads in today’s twin bill of the 41st PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Ynares Center, Antipolo City.
The Beermen are gunning for a second straight win against the Blackwater Elite, while the Kings try to sustain their mini-run versus the Mahindra Enforcers.
San Miguel started its back-to-back title bid with a 96-102 loss to Mahindra but quickly made the necessary adjustments and pulled off a 120-109 win over the GlobalPort Batang Pier last Friday.
Tyler Wilkerson had a big scoring night in that win as he led the Beermen with a whopping 52 points—the most points scored by an import in the conference by far.
Blackwater has been having a decent start, splitting its first four games that put them in a tie with the NLEX Road Warriors and Ginebra for the fourth to sixth spots.
Ginebra started the tournament with back-to-back losses but stopped the bleeding with two straight wins.
The Kings survived a tight contest and escaped with a 92-87 win over sister team Star last Sunday.
“It was a great game. It’s just good things happened to us and bad things happened to them in the end,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone.
Mahindra is likewise out to get a third straight win.
The Enforcers are enjoying a solid start as they won three of their first four matches to occupy the solo second place behind the unbeaten Meralco Bolts, who are 5-0 (win-loss).
Mahindra is fresh from a 106-99 victory over NLEX where import Augustus Gilchrist piled up 30 points and 10 rebounds.
