ALA, Zanfer cooking up Nietes-Estrada bout

A mega fight between the longest-reigning Filipino boxing world champion and two-division world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes and WBA/WBO flyweight king Juan Francisco Estrada is expected to happen later this year.

ALA Promotions International CEO Michael P. Aldeguer confirmed  ongoing negotiations with Zanfer Promotions of Mexico to make the fight happen. Aldeguer also said he is talking with WBO President Francisco Valcarcel to brighten the chances of the match.

If negotiations succeed, the fight will be held on Sept. 24 at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Estrada, who sports a record of 33-2-0 (win-loss-draw) record with 24 knockout wins, has not fought since September 2015 as he is recovering from a right hand injury that required a surgery.

Estrada is best known for dethroning Fil-Hawaiian Brian Viloria to win the two unified titles and punishing Milan Melindo last 2013 in Macau, China.

Nietes, who has a record of 37-1-4, with 21KOs, is training for his homecoming fight on May 27 in Bacolod City against Raul Garcia Hirales of Mexico.

Nietes is also tapped to fight archrival Moises Fuentes, who is the mandatory challenger for his title. He defeated Fuentes last 2014 in Manila after settling for a draw in their first encounter in 2013 in Cebu.  /With reports from Philboxing.com
