A summa cum laude graduate from Cebu Normal University is set to receive the Justice Sotero Cabahug Academic Excellence Award.
Ian Christian Cosido, a Bachelor of Science in Education major in Social Science graduate, outshone 37 other applicants for the award.
He was the only summa cum laude among the applicants so he immediately qualified as the benefactor of the 18-karat gold medal.
Cosido will receive the award on April 22 during the Sotero B. Cabahug Day at the Mandaue Sports Complex as part of the month-long fiesta celebration of the city.
Mandaue City public information officer Roger Paler said 13 Grade 10 first honor students will receive the vice mayor’s medal, four magna cum laude awardees will get the mayor’s medal and 20 cum laude graduates will each receive the Sangguniang Panlungsod medal.
In order to get this award, one must be a resident of Mandaue for at least five years, with good moral character and have a general average rating of 90 percent and above.
The awarding of the Sotero Cabahug gold medal started in 1923.
“It was the aim of our father (Justice Sotero Cabahug) to inspire the youth in Mandaue to achieve academic excellence,” her daughter Guadalupe Cabahug Latonio said.
Justice Sotero Cabahug was a native of Mandaue. Guadalupe and Ramon were his children. He accomplished his college degree and became an attorney by being a working student.
He is considered as Mandaue’s Greatest Son.
“In every position he occupied, his performance was exemplary,” Dr. Susana Cabahug, chairperson of Cabahug Day executive committee, said.
Justice Cabahug excelled in the three branches of government: congressman of Cebu’s 2nd district, justice of the court of appeals, governor of Cebu and secretary of National Defense during President Magsaysay’s tenure.
As the governor of Cebu, he spearheaded the establishment of the Capitol building and the Mandaue presidencia.
“Samtang makakaon pamo katulo sa usa ka adlaw, ipadayon gyud ang academic excellence award,” Latonio told the awardees.
