About Donald, Mike and Tom

Think Bits

Last week our people witnessed the US primaries in five US states called Super Tuesday for both Democrats and Republicans.

In the Republican front, candidates Ted Cruz and John Kasick together with some leaders of the party are doing everything to stop leading candidate Donald Trump from securing the party nomination.

Many Republican leaders feel threatened by Trump’s ascendancy in securing the nomination because of Trump’s unusual statements, declarations and his constant insults to his fellow candidates.

They tried to stop Trump but Trump won the primaries of the five states by a wide margin over Cruz and Kasick.
In the Democratic Party front, Hillary Clinton won four state primaries out of five states that led her opponent Sen. Bernie Sanders to drop his campaign staff.

This indicates that Sanders may be giving up his fight against Clinton for the Democratic nomination though Sanders vowed to continue his fight to have some of his policies included by the party.

Between the two parties, it is the Republican front that is quite interesting because Cruz and Kasick are not yet giving up and vowed to stop Trump by preventing him from getting the magic number of delegates to secure the nomination.

Lately, Donald Trump revealed his planned foreign policy if he wins as president. Trump’s foreign policy plans got a lot of flak from foreign policy experts in the US and the world.

Lately, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama gave the city police Toyota Fortuner and Misubishi Adventure sports utility vehicles to help the city police become more effective in keeping the city safe.

Some question the timing and propriety of the distribution since it is the election period. I can surmise that the mayor wanted to provide vehicles to the police because, after all, Cebu City is a busy and progressive city and it deserves better service from the police.

The SUVs given by the mayor is more reasonable than the police patrol car distributed by former Interior and Local Government secretary Mar Roxas.

The problem of peace and order isn’t dependent on the times. I believe the distribution of SUVs to the police is essential in helping its operations.

Last week’s Liberal Party rally with the Bando Osmeña-Pundok Kauswagan (BO-PK) at the Capitol grounds with President Benigno Aquino III and Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Mar Roxas featured a covenant signing between former mayor Tomas Osmeña and Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III.

The covenant promised to resolve the plight of families covered by the 93-1 ordinance in 60 days. For me, it is presumptuous because it is conditioned on the premise that both Osmeña and Davide are voted into office anew.

If either of them or both of them don’t win, the covenant is a mere scrap of paper. Besides in what capacity did Osmeña sign the document?

Remember he is no longer a Cebu City official, thus the covenant signing may be considered a political gimmick of the BO-PK and LP in order to gain support for their candidates.
