SWU to play without star spiker in Rider Beach volley

By: John Carlo Villaruel May 19,2016 - 10:00 PM

REIGNING Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) women’s beach volleyball champions Southwestern University Lady Cobras (SWU) will be missing the services of ace spiker Floramel Rodriguez in their quest for the crown in the Rider Beach Volleyball tournament, which starts today at the Green Lagoon Park in Compostela town, north Cebu.

Rodriguez was last year’s MVP in the Cesafi indoor volleyball tournament. The reason for her not joining is because she is still having second thoughts of continuing her studies at SWU.

With the absence of Rodriguez, SWU will now rely on the tandem of Janelle Cabahug and Therese Rae Ramas.

“They have played together already but I hope they can adjust with each other as partners,” said multi-titled head coach Dave Arreza.

Other Cesafi member schools that will be competing are the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) backed by Vgood Health Drinks and composed of Christine Dior Vergara and Jessa Jorquia, University of Cebu (UC), University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) and the University of San Carlos pair of Kate Chantal Rodriguez and Shiela Mae Kiseo.

The tournament will also feature three commercial teams and UAAP squads Far Eastern University (FEU) and the University of the Philippines (UP).

Competitors will be divided into two groups. The top two squads in each group will advance to the knockout semifinals slated tomorrow.
