TEAM captains go for each other’s scalps in a side event that will add more spice to the upcoming Cobra IronMan 70.3 Asia Pacific Championship slated August 7 at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa.

The “Clash of the Captains” will be one of the several side events lined-up for the biggest triathlon race of Asia where 3,000 triathletes from 41 countries battle for supremacy.

Conceptualized by the team captains of local triathlon teams, the Clash of Captains is supported by the event’s organizer Sunrise Events Inc. (SEI).

Set to do battle are Team Volvo’s Bryan Borja, Richard Ho of Team TTB, Gianluca Guidicelli of Team Ford Forza, Bernard Vonn Sia of Team Rotary Philippines, Jonel Borromeo of Team Motorace-Kawasaki, Tonyson Luther Lee of Rider Omega Pro Tri Team and Xedessa Villo-Cuyos of Team Tri-S.

The participants will compete in their respective age groups with one goal in mind: beat their personal bests.

“This event will acknowledge their contribution to the sport, and the passion our captains have not just in helping out the sport and competing but also in helping the community,” said one of the organizers Bannie Geronimo.

“This just isn’t for any captain from any team. You need to have made a difference to help out athletes to be able to join. If you look at each and every one of our seven captains, not only are they passionate about triathlon, they have had significant roles in promoting different sports.”

The race will not just be awarding the top finisher among the captains but the organizers will also award the best swim split time, best run split and best bike split.

“We will get the average time of the captain and two other members of his team. The team with the best average time will win,” explained Geronimo.

For the competition’s inaugural leg, each team will put up a certain amount as pot money which will go to the winner.

The proceeds will go to the charity of the captain’s choice.

“Should we fall short in raising enough funds, then we will just do an outreach program,” said Geronimo.
