“Pinoy Aquaman” Macarine getting ready for open water swim in English Channel

Ingemar Macarine “Pinoy Aquaman” is now in the United Kingdom to prepare himself for his first attempt to swim the chilling waters of the English Channel next month.

His upcoming open water swim attempt is dubbed “The First Filipino English Channel Swim” backed by Red Horse Beer. No specific date has been given yet to when the swim will be done next month as his team will still check what day will have a perfect weather for the attempt.

The 39-year-old Macarine, a lawyer, environmentalist and the only successful Filipino open water swimmer having finished 22 long distance open water swims, will be tested in what he described as the most grueling challenge so far, which is to cross a 35-kilometer sea of the English Channel that is part of the Atlantic Ocean.

In his first acclimatization training, Macarine swam regularly for six days, for two to three hours, in 14-degree Celsius waters along the coast of Folkestone in the southern part of UK.

“I was a bit shocked in my first acclimatization swim last Monday because the water was so cold,” Macarine said. “It’s twice as cold compared to my swim from Bohol to Cebu last June.”

The Bohol native Macarine said aside from the very cold temperature of the water, other factors that can make his swim challenging is encounters with jellyfish.

“Thank God I’m doing well for this swim. My next mission is to complete a six-hour swim to prepare myself and this is also a requirement of the Channel Swimming Association,” Macarine said.

Should Macarine complete this latest test, it will be his 23rd successful open water swim.
