AFTER faltering in a world title fight in Seoul, South Korea last Saturday, Jether Oliva of the General Santos City-based Sanman Boxing Gym has decided to call it a career.
Oliva, nicknamed The General, lost to Muhammad Waseem of Pakistan by unanimous decision in their 12-round duel for the World Boxing Council Silver flyweight title at the Millenium Hilton Hotel in Seoul.
At 30 years old, it was the best time for Oliva to hang his gloves for good, said Jim Claude Manangquil, chief operating officer of Sanman Promotions.
“I have talked to Jether Oliva about retiring from the sport he loved. I think he had his chances and he had a good career,” said Manangquil. Upon the advise of Manangquil, Oliva agreed it was the perfect time to retire.
“My duty is done. This is where life begins,” said Oliva, who ended his 10-year professional career with 24 wins, 11 of them by knockouts, six losses and 2 draws. Oliva won four separate titles, including the Mindanao Professional Boxing Federation light flyweight crown, the WBO Oriental minimumweight title, the World Boxing Federation (WBF) International junior flyweight title and the WBF Asia Pacific flyweight crown.
