Market vendors given until Friday to leave

July 20,2016 - 08:55 PM

CEBU City Mayor Tomas Osmeña ordered the closure of the office of the Cebu United Vendors Association (CCUVA) at the second floor of the Carbon Market Unit 3 starting on Friday.

Osmeña said it would now be up to market administrator Winefredo Miro to decide what to do with the space that the vendors association occupied for years.

“They were (already) given enough time (to comply with requirements set for their continued occupancy of the area) since the time of acting mayor Margot Osmeña but they did not comply with any of the requirements,” Miro said.

Margot who assumed as acting mayor last May 17 following the suspension of then mayor Michael Rama questioned CCUVA’s occupancy of the market space in the absence of a valid contract with City Hall.

Last July 15, Mayor Tomas Osmeña also issued a memorandum informing CCUVA of their failure to secure a lease contract, an affidavit of undertaking and a written agreement from City Hall.

The mayor said at least 5,000 association members don’t have a valid business permit and certificate of recognition issued by the city market authority.

Miro said they are giving the association three more days to vacate their Carbon Market Unit 3 office before they would finally padlock it.

“It (closure) was supposedly effective immediately. But of course, we give consideration still, thus the additional days,” Miro said.

CCUVA head and Ermita Barangay Captain Felicismo Rupinta clarified in a phone interview that the market space that they occupy is being leased by Kamansi Cooperative.
