Cesafi standouts Velasco, Cabahug are NBTC All Stars

TWO CESAFI stalwarts are set to flaunt their skills amongst the best high school basketball players in the country as Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu’s Andrew Velasco and the University of the Visayas’ Jancork Cabahug were tapped to compete in the 2017 National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) National High School All Star Game on March 16 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Velasco, the NBTC Cebu tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, and Cabahug, arguably the best high school player this city has to offer, stood out during the two-day tryouts that was held at the San Beda campus in Mendiola last weekend.

“It was a challenge to go up against some of the very best high school players in the country. I just played hard and did my best and I am blessed to be part of this event,” said Velasco, the Bacolod-native who helped lead the Magis Eagles to its seventh straight NBTC Cebu crown.

Two other Cesafi players were at the tryouts – Ateneo de Cebu’s Travis Mantua and Jeremy Nacua.

Velasco added that this accomplishment will serve his confidence well especially with the Magis Eagles missing two-time Cesafi juniors MVP Jed Colonia due to a knee injury.

“This really boosts my confidence and it will hopefully help me play well to help the team as we compete without Jed (Colonia),” Velasco added.

For Cabahug, the selection is his second straight, but you wouldn’t know it from his reaction to the news that he made the cut. “I’m very overwhelmed and I’m taking this as a blessing,” Cabahug said.
