Confab to upgrade teaching capacities of media educators
OFFICIALS of the Philippine Association of Communication Educators Inc. (Pace) and the Cebu Association of Communication Educators (CACE) are inviting media educators, communication researchers and journalism students to join the 2017 Communication and Media Studies Conference (CMSC), which will be held today and tomorrow at the University of San Jose-Recoletos.
The theme of this year’s conference is “(Re)Shaping Communication with the Digital Natives.”
Pace president Marco Polo said the conference was organized to upgrade the teaching capacities of media educators and to provide a public forum for scholarly research on communication.
The conference will discuss the sociopolitical, cultural and media ecological contexts that shape how digital natives engage and should be engaged. It will also share strategies that will enhance curricula on digital media literacy. Topics also include the current plague of “fake news” and the AlDub phenomenon.
In a press conference yesterday, Polo said he was glad that the partnership between Pace and CACE has made this conference in Cebu possible.
“We really want to bring this CMSC conference closer to our members nationwide,” he added.
CMSC chair Joven Castro explained that “digital natives” refer to the millennial generation, which he said was born within an ecosystem of extensive exposure to communication technology.
“The assumption is we are already communicating with the digital natives, but are we doing it strategically? When we say we want to reshape the way we communicate with [them], we will learn to understand further the communicative behavior of the digital natives and strategically realign the way we communicate with them,” he said.
CACE president Nestor Ramirez expressed hope that this conference will generate interest for communication research in Cebu.
“We still have to develop the culture of research here in Cebu. That’s why we are holding it here,” he said.
A press statement released by Pace said that 39 paper presentations from the faculty and students all over the country will be featured in the conference.
Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of the Philippines chair Norman Agatep, Philippine Star Desk Editor Leo Laparan II, Gemma Mendoza of Rappler, and Sun Star Editor-in-Chief Nini Cabaero will also serve as plenary speakers. /CNU Intern Sheen Manigo
