For sweeping the top 10 of the 2017 Naval Architect and Marine Engineering Licensure exams, the University of Cebu’s topnotchers received P700,000 in cash from the school yesterday.
UC founder and president Augusto Go, his daughter and school chancellor Candice Gotianuy, handed a P100,000 check to topnotcher Jayvie Albarando in simple rites yesterday morning.
The 11 other graduates who ranked in the top 10 each received P50,000. They were Randolph Tabernero (2), Reanne Mangubat and Lyndon Hanz Pernites (3), Vince Alex Villahermosa (4), Lendon Arcillas (5), Jochelle Tumulak (6), Brylle Enad (7), KC Rare Emnace (8), Christakhis Niño Nodalo (9), Kit Boniefel Bontor and Charisse Ivy Talle (10).
Gotianuy also awarded P100,000 cash to Jacklyn Antolihao, chairperson of their university’s Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering program, for mentoring the topnotchers.
Go, who also celebrated his 82nd birthday yesterday, said the “unprecedented and historic” feat was the best birthday gift he received yet.
He said Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña called him up to congratulate his school’s performance in the exams.
The cash awarding ceremony was done inside Go’s office at UC Main Campus at Sanciangko Street, Cebu City.
Gotianuy told reporters in a press conference that she was proud and still surprised that their graduates swept the top 10 spots in this year’s exams.
“This was unprecedented. We’re overjoyed — very overjoyed that this is the result of the hard work of everyone, from the students, the faculty. We’re truly surprised,” Gotianuy said.
The 21-year-old Albarando said he was both grateful and shocked to receive a “huge sum of money” as reward for topping the board exams.
He said he planned to set aside portions of the incentive as savings while he would go look for a job.
Third-placer Lyndon Hanz Pernites, whom the group described as their “backbone” of support, said he will enroll in a mechanical engineering program and spend the P50,000 he received from UC officials on his future engineering studies.
“I always wanted to work on ships ever since I was three years old. I get excited riding a ship which made me pursue marine studies,” he said.
Gotianuy attributed UC’s feat to teamwork through mentorship.
“One teacher who believes in the students, teaches them, stays with them, shapes them, and guides them to excellence,” she said.
Antolihao said she monitored and guided more than 100 UC graduates prior to the exams.
She said she was proud of their performance and told them to stay humble and optimistic.
“We know the entire thing we’re reviewing won’t come out in the tests so I told them to ask me any question or ask help if they find something difficult so that I can discuss and explain it to them,” she said.
Reanne Mangubat said it is also important for graduates to de-stress and have some downtime before taking the exams.
“You really have to do your best in preparing for the exam. Study hard and study smart. But never forget to have fun to avoid stress,” she said.
