THE SG-ARQ Builders captured the championship in the Carcar City Mayor Nice Apura Cup as they outlasted the ASPA Scaffolding in a double-overtime thriller, 123-119, last Saturday night at the Carcar Sports Complex.
ASPA had the inside track on the victory as they led by eight with under a minute left in overtime. But the veteran-laden Builders refused to give in and tied the game at 111 off a booming three-pointer by former University of the Visayas (UV) stud, Eman Calo.
Former PBA two-guard Jojo Tangkay then took over during the second overtime, where he drained four three-pointers to help the Builders complete the escape act.
Another former PBA guard, Reed Juntilla, led the way for SG-ARQ with 31 points while Tangkay and Ferdinand Lusdoc each had 24 markers. Towering big man Rino Berame chipped in 13 while Jayford Rodriguez dropped in 11.
Aside from the trophy, the Builders went home with the P50,000 cash prize.
Another former ace of UV, Frangiel Omolon, led the way for ASPA with 31 points. ASPA pocketed P30,000 for its runner-up finish.
