Cebu City takes Batang Pinoy lead going into last day of competition
Dumaguete City — The Cebu City Niños played it rough in the “City of Gentle People” and took the lead in the medal standings going into the last day of the Batang Pinoy Visayas Games 2017 here.
The Niños harvested 18 gold medals in this Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)–organized multi-sporting meet for student-athletes aged 15 years below to climb from third place to the top.
Cebu City had a 40-43-40 (gold-silver-bronze) tally for first place while Cebu Province remained at second with a 34-21-26 haul. Host Dumaguete slid to third from the top with a 26-21-24 tally as of yesterday afternoon.
The Niños got 10 gold medals from dancesport, five from taekwondo, two from athletics and one from table tennis yesterday.
The gold medalists in dancesport, one of Cebu City’s favorite events, are Francis Isaia Diluvio and Paige Ianah Silud (junior latin and junior standard class A), Mark Gabriel Dumaran and Ysabelle Monique Zambo (juvenile latin and standard class D), Nigel John Angel and Shadelle Niña Hernandez (juvenile latin and standard Class C), Hezekiah Sobrevega and Rydel Rowella Pat (junior standard class C), Ralph Kevin Lapaz and Mitchloni Danauanao (juvenile latin and standard class A), and Niño Salve and Trixie Pearl Dicdican (junior latin class C).
Dancesport was held at the Lamberto Macias Sports Complex.
The gold medalists of Cebu City in taekwondo at the Negros Oriental Convention Center were Malaki Arturo III (cadet kyurogi welterweight category), Xander Palacpac and Rebecca Ponte (cadet mixed pair poomsae), and Nohea Dela Fuente and Romeo Reyes (junior mixed pair poomsae).
Palacpac also ruled the cadet male individual poomsae while Johan Concepcion topped the junior male individual poomsae.
At the Governor Mariano Paredes oval, Mary Joy Loberanis added two golds for Cebu City as she topped the 1,500-meter run and joined the rest of the Niños relay team to top the 4x400m relay girls’ event.
The pair of Eljay Dan Tormis and Krizzia Lauren Acaylar, meanwhile, dominated the mixed pair event of the table tennis event for another gold for the Niños.
Cebu Province also put on a good performance yesterday after hauling 11 gold medals. It harvested 10 golds from its taekwondo team and one from boxing.
They are expected to bag more golds as its teams in basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball, table tennis and badminton have reached the finals.
