A netizen who was threatened with charges by the Prevention Restoration Orderly Beautification and Enhancement (Probe) for accusing them of maltreating vendors during a clearing operation on Colon Street last Thursday (April 19) drew attention from netizens on the incident.
Basilionisisa said, “why isn’t the local government creating an extension of the public market with low rentals where these poor little entrepreneurs can earn a decent livelihood? if they are really doing something ‘bad’ in the community, why not arrest ALSO the buyers (include it in the ordinance) as they are the ones pushing these vendors to ‘break’ the law? No buyers no sellers! meanwhile, please create a market for them.”
Another netizen named Vertumnus wrote, “Are the enforcers responsible for dumping food on the street? The answer is yes. Might not be deliberate but the end results is just the same. Someone’s livelihood ended up in the gutter. I don’t see why they couldn’t wait them out until they leave. Using force only leads to confrontation.”
While Ako Pilipino commented, “The actions taken by the local government to keep the streets free of street vendors is commendable. However, the government should have a sustainable program or livelihood to keep these vendors from coming back, otherwise it is a never-ending cycle.”
