Recycle school supplies, DepEd advises parents

The regional office of the Department of Education (DepEd) called on parents in northern Cebu to recycle old school supplies for this school year.

“We really welcome recycled materials. For example their old notebooks, they can put small artworks to make it look better,” regional DepEd director Carmelita Dulangon said yesterday.

Dulangon said they told school officials not to require students to wear complete school uniforms since most parents in northern Cebu have yet to recover from the destruction wrought by supertyphoon Yolanda last year.

“I have already instructed the teachers that by first day of classes their lesson plans are ready and I know students are also ready since they are excited to see their classmates and new teachers,” she said.

DepEd field supervisor Victor Yntig said they are unable to give the number of classrooms that were repaired or built.

The agency previously recorded 1,973 damaged classrooms and 366 classrooms planned for construction in northern Cebu.

In Bogo City, 160 classrooms were damaged and 52 rooms were planned for construction, Yntig said.

Dulangon said most of the damaged rooms have been repaired. But she said this year’s opening of classes will see less than half of classes in northern Cebu held under tents.

“We are trying to find nipa for roofs to reduce the heat but it’s very rare in north Cebu,” Dulangon said. Dulangon advised the teachers to start early in the class.

She admitted that the damaged rooms and tents can inconvenience students which is why she advised the teachers to adopt motivational approaches to teaching.
