Unity Village to rise in Daanbantayan

THIRTY-year-old Renaline Morales, mother of three, scrambled to look for safer ground right before Typhoon Haiyan pummeled the houses near the shoreline of Poblacion, Daanbantayan in the province of Cebu.

When Renaline and her family came back to shore after the typhoon, nothing was left but slabs of what used to be parts of their house.
Recently, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the soon-to-rise Unity Village which will serve as the new community for typhoon survivors like Renaline’s family who reside in the coastal area.

The building of the Unity Village in nearby Pajo, Daanbantayan will be funded by global donations from CEMEX. Forty-four families from Daanbantayan will soon enjoy homes in a safer location.

“When we learned that help is needed in Northern Cebu, everyone in CEMEX Philippines—including our colleagues from different CEMEX business units worldwide—immediately expressed the will to contribute whatever can be shared,” said Pedro Palomino, CEMEX Philippines country president.

Earlier, CEMEX also held a groundbreaking ceremony for the building of 44 houses in the City of Bogo, also in Northern Cebu.

The construction of the Unity Villages is part of CEMEX’s bigger rebuilding effort called Build Unity, a rehabilitation program for typhoon-affected communities in Northern Cebu. Other projects under this program include the renovation of Kawit National High School in Medellin, the provision of a marine sanctuary and the building of a livelihood training center in San Remegio, and the donation of “bancambulansya” or boat ambulance which will ply the coasts of Carnaza, Malapascua, Gibitngil, and Batbatan, among others.
