CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Cebu City Disaster Risk and Reduction Office (CDRRMO) said there is no reason to be alarmed about the waterspout spotted over the sea waters off the South Road Properties (SRP) on Tuesday morning, May 3, 2022.

“The Disaster Office doesn’t perceive this as a threat to create impact in our area of responsibility, however, it warns the constituents to stay vigilant,” said the CDRRMO on its Facebook page.

The CDRRMO also explained how waterspouts form.

“A waterspout comes from cumulus clouds that descend below and doesn’t contain a spout that comes from the water. The formation of waterspouts is caused by a condensation of clouds. The direction static and non-fast moving.”

Netizens in Cebu were quick to share pictures and videos of the waterspout from different areas as the phenomenon could be seen prominently from the shore and even from the mountains.

Spectators were amused by the phenomena while some feared that it would fall on land and turn into a tornado.

But the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Mactan Station said that the waterspout did not fall on land and dissipated within 10 minutes.
