Free food from college student
CEBU CITY, Philippines— A college student in Cebu City is not only filling up tummies but also hearts with his gesture of giving free food to those who are hungry.
In the bustling streets of Minglanilla town, Cebu, 22-year-old college student Christian Geonzon is doing more than just running a food cart business outside a noted university.
Geonzon recently shared on Facebook a photo of a sign displayed on his food stall. It read: “Kung gegutom ka, [u]nya wakay kwarta, doola ang tig-bantay. Ayaw kaulaw.”
(If you’re hungry but don’t have money, approach the stall vendor. Don’t be shy.)

It’s a simple yet powerful message that lights up a person’s day, especially if he or she is hungry.
How does he do this and avoid incurring a big loss in his business?
Geonzon explained that when he meets his daily sales quota, he starts giving away free food from his cart.
“I’m always grateful sa mga blessings naabot. If makuha na nako ang quota sa sales, always nako genahatag ang sobra or always ko mag share og mga food sa mga tao. Kay na inspire ko sa saying ni Winston Churchill na ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give’,” he said.
(I’m always grateful for the blessings I receive. If I reach my sales quota, I always give away what’s left or share the food with others. Because I am inspired by the saying of Winston Churchill, which is ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.’)
‘Kindness comes back’
Geonzon sells some of the favorite local street food like pork lumpia, tawgi, dynamite, fried chicken, and chicken pastil in his cart.
He says most people who get the free food are the homeless and fellow students who find themselves without enough money for a meal in the afternoon.

“Nindot gyud sa pamati na makatabang ko sa tao sa walay pag duhaduha. It feels so good to share jud kay i know kindness comes back. Dako kaayung kalipay nako na makita sa tao nga nalipay sila kay na tambalan ilang ka gutom. Waman sila’y ika bayad, pero ang Ginoo nay bahala mo reward sa akoa,” he said.
It’s a nice feeling that I am able to help people without hesitation. It feels so good to share because I know kindness comes back. I feel very happy when I see a person who becomes happy when their hunger is satisfied. They may have nothing to pay me with, but I live it all to the Lord.
Geonzon’s act of kindness is a heartwarming reminder of the compassion that can thrive in the most unexpected places.
