Asian Games: Casares, Remolino among Top 15 finishers in men’s triathlon

CEBU CITY, Philippines– Asian Games first timers, Fernando Casares and Cebu’s Andrew Kim Remolino finished among the Top 15 in the men’s triathlon on Friday, September 29, 2023, at the Chun’an Jieshou Sports Centre Triathlon Course.

Casares, the reigning Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) gold medalist, and Remolino, a two-time SEA Games silver medalist made it into the Top 15 among 32 other competing triathletes from all over Asia.

The Filipino-Spanish Casares finished the Olympic-distance triathlon race in two hours and 53 seconds good for 10th place, while Remolino grabbed the 13th spot in 2:04.47 in their Asian Games debut.

Their standings were impressive in a race plagued with Did Not Finish (DNF) and lapped penalties.

Casares finished the 1.5-kilometer swim at 21:20 and 1:00.33 in the 40k bike race. He finished the 10k run in 38:02.

Meanwhile, Remolino of Talisay City, south Cebu clocked 21:20 in the swim, 1:00.31 in the bike, and 41:51 in the run.

Japanese captures gold, silver

The Asian Games gold medal went to Japan’s Nener Kenji with a time of 1:50.54, while Makoto Odakura claimed the silver medal in 1:51.49. Kazakhstan’s Ayan Beisenbayev bagged the bronze medal in 1:52.25.

The rest of the top 10 finishers in the men’s individual triathlon were Mingxi Lu (China), Jason Tai Long Ng (Hong Kong), Temirov Temirlan (Kazakhstan), Junjie Fan (China), Arslon Tursunov (Uzbekistan), and Rashif Amila Yaqin (Indonesia).

A total of 10 triathletes were tagged DNF while two of them were lapped by race officials.

Alcoseba, Mangrobang plunge into action Saturday

Tomorrow, Saturday, October 30, 2023, it’s Cebuana, Raven Faith Alcoseba’s turn to race in the women’s individual triathlon along with six-time SEA Games gold medalist Kim Mangrobang.

On October 2, Cebuano Matthew Justine Hermosa will team up with Alcoseba, Casares, and Mangrobang in the Asian Games mixed relay race.   /rcg
