Smart-Araneta
4:15 p.m. GlobalPort vs. Blackwater
7 p.m. – Alaska vs. Ginebra
THE ALASKA Aces and the GlobalPort Batang Pier seek the early lead in the standings when they battle separate rivals in the PBA Governors’ Cup today at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
GlobalPort will try to stick it to the Blackwater Elite in the 4:15 p.m. opener while the nightcap will see the Aces take on league-darlings Barangay Ginebra at 7 p.m.
After suffering through a mediocre campaign in the previous conference, the Aces got right back on the winning track with an emphatic 106-80 victory over the Blackwater Elite during this conference’s opening playdate last Tuesday. The Batang Pier also opened their own campaign in similar fashion, dominating the Meralco Bolts, 92-73.
The road to a second win for the Aces though, is not expected to be rosy as they face a Ginebra team now being coached by many-time NCAA champion Frankie Lim.
The former taskmaster of the mighty San Beda Red Lions, Lim will try to get the most out of the Kings’ guard-heavy lineup led by LA Tenorio, Mark Caguioa, Jayjay Helterbrand, recently acquired Sol Mercado, who the team received from Barako Bull in exchange for Joseph Yeo and import Orlando Johnson, who once played for the Indiana Pacers in the NBA.
