Defending Champion University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors suffered its second defeat in the ongoing Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s football tournament after losing to the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, 1-3, yesterday at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) football pitch.

USC, which started its campaign with a 1-2 loss to former champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) last Saturday, looked headed to bouncing back strong. It actually scored the first goal of the match courtesy of rookie JM Kwan, a former Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) booter. Kwan scored in  the 44th minute but USC  couldn’t maintain its pace in the second half.

Kwan scored an easy goal coming from a pass from his teammate at the corner of the right wing. UV’s goalkeeper and defender collided midair, giving him enough room to score an easy one.

But UV recovered as Nigerian Aniete Ating equalized the score from a throw-in near the goal in the 21st minute of the second half.  Aldrin Leosola gave UV a 2-1 cushion three minutes later via a long-distance shot that went high above USC’s goalkeeper.

Pedro Agustin Diao sealed the win after scoring UV’s third goal in the 39th minute of the second half.

The win was a great recovery for UV, which lost to University of Cebu (UC), 0-4, last Saturday. The Lancers now have a 1-1 (win-loss) card.

In the other collegiate match, USJ-R logged its second win after nipping University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F), 1-0, courtesy of Janry Miñoza’s goal in the 12th minute of the first half.

In the secondary division, defending champion Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) pulled off another dominant victory against USC, 10-0.

DBTC’s scorers were Mark Unabia (2nd, 10th, 34th), John Vitualla (14th, 19th, 56th), Thomas Ramos (46th, 78th), Agustin Roa (23rd) and Rafael Orale (75th).
