Group laments environment not in bets’ platform

A coalition of environment groups expressed their dismay over  the exclusion of environmental issues from  the country’s presidential candidates’ political platforms.

Representatives from Sanlakas, Greenpeace, Philippine Earth Justice Center (PEJC) and Oceana attended yesterday’s 888 News Forum at the Marco Polo Plaza hotel.

Together, the organizations make up part of the Green Thumb Coalition, whose goal is to make sure that the environment plays a central role in the platform of each of the candidates in the coming elections.

According to Atty. Aaron Pedrosa of Sanlakas, the coalition came together because they noticed that environmental issues in the country have not been given enough attention.

Vince Cinches of Greenpeace said  they hope that by bringing this initiative in Cebu, which has the biggest voting population next to Manila, they will be able to raise the discussion of environmental issues to the forefront of the national candidates’ agenda.

Pedrosa said the coalition hopes the people will make a wise choice by voting for someone who is willing to take a stand for the environment.

However, the group clarified that they are not endorsing any candidate and they just aim to have the candidates sign a covenant that they will include the environment in their platforms.
