WINSTONE Villamonte hit a shot at the buzzer as Abellana National School (ANS) stunned the University of San Carlos (USC), 38–37, in the Passerelle division of the Milo-backed SBP-Passerelle Tournament last Monday at the Ateneo de Cebu basketball courts along Mango Avenue, Cebu City.
Playing for the first time in the Passerelle division, ANS trailed by as much as 10 but came all the way behind to grab the hard-earned victory — its first in two games.
Kent John Remocaldo led ANS with 13 points, but it was Villamonte who delivered the game’s biggest basket.
For a moment, it seemed as if USC would come away with the victory as tit led, 37–34, after a triple by Rasheed Libradilla with 40 seconds remaining. But Ketch Jakosalem pulled ANS to within one with a bucket 10 seconds later.
Both teams traded turnovers which gave possession back to ANS with four seconds left.
It was then when Villamonte launched from the right wing and scored as time expired to give the rookie squad the win.
In the other Passerelle game, the University of the Visayas moved up to 2–0 with a merciless 46–18 bashing of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation. Jose Dizon tallied 19 to pace the boys in green and white.
Meanwhile, in the SBP class, the reigning champions UV bumped their record up to 2–0 with a convincing 48–29 win over USC.
