The Aboitiz Foundation successfully held its first ever “gARTbage Ville Mixed Media Art Competition” last December 17 at the University of the Philippines – Cebu campus.
The activity is named gARTbage with emphasis on the word ‘art’ as students turn garbage into different forms of art. The competition exhibited the creativity, resourcefulness and talents of the students.
Conceptualized and organized by a group of Aboitiz scholars, the activity was contested by 23 Cebu City public high schools.
A total of 194 kilograms of waste materials were recycled and re-used in the competition.
Apas National High School bagged the first prize, followed by Regino Mercado Night High School (2nd place) and Don Vicente Rama Memorial National High School (3rd place). They received cash prizes and sets of multimedia equipment from the Aboitiz Foundation.
The activity has become a platform to raise awareness on the importance of the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle) and provide an innovative venue for students to showcase their talents through a competition.
This also empowers students to help in building a BetterWorld and a sustainable society that can be entrusted to future generations.
As part of its Environment for a #BetterWorld campaign, the Aboitiz Foundation spearheads the implementation of programs that promote environmental conservation and biodiversity enhancement.
Among these initiatives include the Race to Reduce program that underpins the Aboitiz Group’s commitment to the efficient use of enterprise resources, the A-Park Program which aims to plant nine million trees nationwide by 2020, and the Aboitiz Cleanergy Park, an eight-hectare outdoor biodiversity park in Davao City that is home to the critically-endangered hawksbill sea turtle (pawikan) and 66 other species.
