UV takes down USJ-R in Cabañero hoopfest

THE reigning Cesafi champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers did not miss a beat as they defeated the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 92-87, in the 2nd Raul Cabañero Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament on Thursday night at the Bulacao Sports Complex in Talisay City, southern Cebu.

Athletic forward Jayson Balabag led the way for the Green Lancers with 29 points, and he got backed up by wingman Josue Segumpan, who had 19. Cesafi Mythical Five forward Monic Soliva chipped in 15 as the Lancers raced off to a 21-8 lead which set the tone for the hard-fought win.

RJ Dinolan scored 18 for the Jaguars, while Miguel Gastador added 17. JB Mantilla pitched in 14.

In the other game of the double-header, the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats bested the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 82-81.

CIT’s balanced attack was spearheaded by Mariel Munez, Joshua dela Cerna, who had 11 and Mark Quijano, who tallied 10.

JP Batac scored 20 to lead the way for the Panthers.

The tournament is being staged behind the leadership of barangay captain Raul Cabañero and councilors Banjo Abastillas, Darwin Cabañero and Agnes Lastimosa.
