After losing in the semifinal round last year, Cebuano netter Chad Connor Cuizon made a vow to do better this year.
Yesterday, Cuizon took a step closer towards realizing that promise when he advanced into the quarterfinal round of the 12-under boys division of the 11th Cebuana Lhuillier Tennis Circuit at the Citigreen Tennis Resort in Punta Princesa, Cebu.
The nine-year old Lapu Lapu City native started off his titular bid with a lopsided 6-2, 6-0 victory against Niño Teking to move into the round of 16.
On Monday, the unranked Cuizon faces a tall order against second ranked Aslan Carbonilla of Iligan in the quarterfinal round.
Other Cebuanos who won their opening matches yesterday were Mitch Largo and Cesar Salimbangon in the 14-under boys category.
Salimbangon defeated Matthew Ramirez 6-4, 6-0 to set up a second round showdown with Ashton Villanueva who earlier dominated Chad Cantiga 6-1, 6-0.
The unseeded Largo on the other hand, will battle Carbonilla in the second round after stunning sixth-seed Khenz Justiniani in a three-set thriller, 6-3, 5-7, 10-3.
Largo looks to exact revenge on Carbonilla who earlier beat Cebuano John Rafael Seno via walkover in the first round.
Largo and Carbonilla will pplay at 10am today.
Meanwhile in 16-under girls play, visiting netter Ghylliana Yu crushed Hannah Tapic, 6-3, 6-0 to move into the second round. She is set to meet top-seed Carlyn Bless Guarde who earned a bye in the opening round.
