Officials of Barangay Kamputhaw in Cebu City refuted the allegations raised by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña about the uncollected garbage in their area.

Kamputhaw Barangay Chairman Trifonio Lequigan Jr. said the photos of uncollected garbage along Gorordo Avenue that were posted on Facebook should have been collected by City Hall’s Department of Public Services (DPS).

In yesterday’s press conference at the City Hall office of Cebu City Councilor Raymond Alvin Garcia, Lequigan said DPS had an agreement with the barangays in which the DPS will collect garbage from major thoroughfares.

The barangays would then collect garbage at the interior roads and sitios.

“The DPS is there. We are concentrating in the interior areas. We only have four garbage trucks in our barangay,” he said yesterday.

Aside from Gorordo Avenue, Lequigan said the DPS is also assigned to collect the garbage along Escario St. and Gen. Maxilom Avenue.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña earlier said he will suspend the financial assistance to garbage loaders and drivers of Barangay Kamputhaw after seeing the mounds of garbage left along Gorordo Avenue.

But Councilor Garcia, who lives in the barangay and was once a councilman there, said the mayor is just picking on barangay Kamputhaw and other Team Rama allied barangays.

Sought for comment, DPS asst. chief John Paul Gelasque admitted that Gorordo Ave. is part of their coverage.

“The barangay may have not collected the interior area there that’s why the people left their trash in the mainline (Gorordo Ave.),” he said.

Gelasque said the scheduled collection of garbage there is from 5 p.m. until 7 a.m.

Gelasque said he plans to visit the barangay and talk to officials there as well as persuade Mayor Osmeña not to stop giving allowances to the barangay workers.
