After a string of setbacks in singles competition, top Cebuana tennis player Lyrah Mae Repollo finally found her rhythm to win the Most Valuable Player award in the Palawan Pawnshop – Palawan Express Pera Padala (PPS-PEPP) regional tennis tournament last Tuesday in the Tacloban Tennis Courts in Leyte.
Repollo sealed the prestigious award by bagging four titles in the tournament, putting an end to a struggle that saw her absorbing nine straight losses in singles competitions dating back to the 22nd JRG Gullas Cup last April in her hometown of the City of Naga.
Repollo, who grabbed numerous doubles crowns last month, ended her month-long title drought in singles by beating Hazel Coderos, 6-4, 6-1, in the 14-under girls final before dominating Hazel’s older sister Bless Coderos, 6-3, 6-0, for the 16-under title.
“I just focused on my game then I disciplined myself more and faith in God were the factors for my victories,” said Repollo.
The 13-year-old Repollo capped off her dominating run with a pair of doubles crowns as she teamed up with Hazel to subdue Selena Oro and Noeus Beronio, 8-3, for the 14-under plum. She then joined forces with Bless Coderos to defeat Rose Salamida and Trexre Sumapig. 8-2. for the 18-under diadem.
Another City of Naga native Vhon Tudtud rallied from an opening set meltdown to walk away with a 3-6, 6-0, 11-9 triumph over Ken Mejia for the 18-under boys’ tiara.
Tudtud will join fellow Cebuano Venz Alforque in the PPS-PEPP Baybay City leg, which opens today. Repollo for her part will be heading to Pagadian City for training sessions until May.
