BASKETBALL in the city is about to get a much-needed jolt as the Cebu City Mayor’s Cup commences on June 8 at the Cebu City Sports Institute.
The tournament is being organized by basketball patron Joselito Manguerra and will feature four Cebu-based commercial basketball squads. These are ASPA Scaffolding, RMA Cargo Logistics, Vescon Construction and RCR Structures.
According to Manguerra, he is organizing the competition in order to revive Cebu City’s struggling basketball scene.
In the past, the city flourished with multiple leagues such as the Cebu Basketball Association and the Cebu Basketball League, giving players the opportunity to showcase their skills.
However, in recent years, the scene has gone dry save for the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi), which runs from August to October.
The champion squad of the four-day competition will receive P50,000 while the runner-up snatches P30,000. The second runner-up will bag P20,000.
The teams will play a single round-robin with the top two finishers at the end of the elimination round advancing to the winner-take-all finals.
