San Francisco rules 7th Cong. Red Basketball Cup
TEAM San Francisco collared the championship crown of the 7th Cong. Red Basketball Cup after downing Carmen town, 94-72, in their title match last Saturday night at the Danao Civic Center in Danao City, northern Cebu.
Aside from bringing the championship crown to Camotes Island, the Christian Liaz-coached San Francisco also took the P50,000 top purse.
Team Carmen of coach Ronnie Mata pocketed P30,000 and a trophy as a first runner-up.
San Francisco’s top player Kenny Rocacurva was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP).
He was joined in the Mythical 5 by teammates Jake Gonzales and Ravi John Herda, and Carmen’s Christian Phillip Bejoc and John Fitz Banzon.
Kenny Rocacurva got P2,000 for winning the MVP award. Members of the Mythical Team also received P1,000 each.
Part of the grassroots sports development program of Fifth District Representative Ramon “Red” H. Durano VI, the tournament started last May 5.
Aside from San Francisco and Carmen, other competing teams were Danao City, Borbon, Catmon, Compostela, Liloan, Pilar, Poro, Sogod and Tudela.
Danao City of coach Edsel Vallena finished the tournament third, while Sogod of coach Phillip dela Cerna wound up fourth.
The tournament followed a home-and-away format in the single round-robin elimination phase. The top four teams in the eliminations advanced to Final 4 round. The top two semifinalists then fought for the crown.
