USJ-R karatekas rule Governor’s Cup 2017 Karatedo Championships

THE UNIVERSITY of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) finished overall champions in the Governor’s Cup 2017 Karatedo Championships last Sunday at the City Mall in Consolacion town, northern Cebu.

USJ-R piled up 24 gold medals, seven silvers and four bronze medals to win the crown.

“Our karatekas have always been a medal earners for us. There is no competition that they have participated in the last five years that they didn’t bring honor to the school,” USJ-R assistant sports moderator Ernest Vergara said.

Among the gold medalists for USJ-R were Gerald Baclaan, Jeremy Nopre, and Felix Calipusan Jr. Vince Harvey Cabrera also won a gold in the sync and kumite category while Daniel Fernandez and Jomar Pepito joined the pool of gilt snarers in the sync competition.

Micah Viscayno, Sam de Ariel Zozobrado, and Ma. Minerva Mercader also reigned supreme in the women’s sync category. Zozobrado, Mercader, and Rhea Tuble, meanwhile, pocketed golds in the kumite action.

Completing the list of gold medalists are Chloe Angelie Mendoza, Fely Mae Florida and Alenna Benitez.

Baclaan and Calipusan were also awarded as Individual Advance Kata Senior’s Best of the Best and Individual Advance Kata Junior’s Best of the Best, respectively in the tournament participated by 23 clubs and schools.

The Jaguars team was mentored by Shujen Manuel Aloba Sr.
