Donaire scores unanimous decision win over Hernandez
IT took 10 months for five-division world champion Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. to bounce back from losing to Jessie Magdaleno for the WBO world super bantamweight title last year.
This after the 34-year-old Donaire won the WBC silver featherweight title by defeating unheralded Mexican Ruben Garcia Hernandez at the Alamo Dome in Texas, USA, yesterday.
He emerged victorious via a unanimous decision victory under a new promoter Richard Schaefer of Ringstar Sports.
The three judges scored it 100-90, 97-93, 99-91, all in favor of the Filipino, who after parting ways with boxing giant Top Rank Promotions after losing to Magdaleno in November of last year.
Donaire improved to 38-4-0 (win-loss-draw) while Hernandez dropped to 22-3-1.
Donaire said that he wants to fight big names and reassert his name as a world champion. He called out Scott Quigg, Carl Frampton, Lee Selby, Leo
Santa Cruz and even WBO world featherweight champion Oscar Valdez, who defended his title against Filipino Genesi Servania in Tucson, Arizona last Saturday.
Meanwhile, SanMan Boxing Gym’s top prospect and the reigning WBC youth intercontinental lightweight champion Romero Duno of Tagum City triumphed against Mexican Juan Pablo Sanchez via unanimous decision in a separate fight card that happened at the Forum in Inglewood, California.
All three judges scored the bout 78-74 in favor of the 21-year old Duno.
Duno earned his praises when he knocked out the once unbeaten Christian Gonzales to wrest the WBC youth intercontinental lightweight title last March in the US.
