Milo Marathon organizers consider Cebu’s hosting as most successful outside of Manila
Cebu City’s first hosting of the National Milo Marathon Grand Finals was considered the best outside of Manila by Milo Sports executives.
An estimated 12,000 runners joined the foot race that started at the front of Cebu Normal University (CNU) along Osmeña Boulevard and ended at the Cebu City Sports Center.
Milo Sports Executive Robbie de Vera said there was no major incident and injuries recorded in the race except for some runners collapsing at the finish line because of the difficulty of the 42-kilometer route that reached Mandaue City.
“We are very happy with the turn out of the event. It was a very successful event for us, thanks to our national organizer Ricky Ballesteros and to all the volunteers in the first hosting of Cebu City,” De Vera said.
Around 1,600 volunteers manned the official route and the race venue from 2 a.m to 9 a.m to make sure that everything was covered from start to finish.
Ballesteros said the race wouldn’t have been successful without the help of the local government units of Talisay City, Cebu City and Mandaue City.
He also gave credit to the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) of Mandaue City and Cebu City, the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (Eruf), the different barangays along the race route and the Philippine National Police.
RunRio’s Andrew Neri, meanwhile, said the race was one of the best organized and is one of the best races outside Manila.
“It was difficult to manage a route from Cebu City to Mandaue City because of the traffic. But we managed to overcome the challenges and make it a successful race. So hands down to the national organizers and volunteers,” Neri said.
RunRio was in charge of the technical aspect of the race.
“Hopefully we can make this happen in Cebu again.”
Aside from Cebu, Angeles City and Iloilo City also hosted the Grand Finals of the National Milo Marathon. Angeles hosted it in 2015 while Iloilo did it in 2016.
