National Team members want to enjoy stint in Sinulog Open

Although they vowed to give their best, members of the Philippine Bowling Team said they are also out to have some fun in the ongoing 19th Bowlingplex Tenpin Association (BTA)- Cebu Sinulog Open National Tournament at the Gaisano Bowlingplex in Banilad, Cebu City.

Krizziah Lyn Tabora, one of only three Filipina bowlers who won the coveted title of the Bowling World Championships, is playing for the first time in the tournament and wants to make it memorable by enjoying the competition.

“I was invited by Tito Bel (Suelto), Aui (Padawan), and Xyra (Cabusas) to play here and since they are my friends, I just can’t decline their invitation. Besides, I have a lot of free time before our training camp for the Asian Games,” the 26-year-old Tabora told Cebu Daily News.

Tabora is one of several National Team players who are in town for the six-day tournament.

Tabora won the women’s title in the 53rd Qubica AMF Bowling World Cup Champions held in Hermosillo, Mexico last November. She was the third Filipina to win the title after Lita dela Rosa and Olivia “Bong” Coo, who won it four times.

“There is always that competitive side playing in this tournament but it’s more like a friendly national tournament where a lot of bowlers in the country converged to display camaraderie rather than serious competition. It’s purely fun for us as we set aside the competition but we still play our best,” added Tabora, who won the bronze medal in the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Other national team members competing here are Kevin Cu, Cebuano Jomar Jumapao, JR Tan, JB Vargas, Marky del Carmen, Kenzo Umali, Rachelle Leon, Rica Macatula, and John Paule Macatula.

The 23-year old John Paule Macatula has already competed in this tournament. He said that he always comes back because he enjoys the people, the place and the food.

“I enjoy playing here and if I ever qualify for the masters’ event then I have to do my best without sacrificing enjoyment,”said Macatula.

Tabora is currently placed at 17th in the ongoing qualifying round for the masters’ event with 1,211 pinfalls while Mcatula is at 32nd place with 767 pinfalls.

The leading bowler in the initial games of the qualifying round as of yesterday was BTA’s Arthur Tapaya with 1,381 pinfalls followed by Cebu Tenpin Bowling Association’s (Cetba) Micmic Miranda with 1,305 pinfalls and Luther Tapaya with 1,287 pinfalls.
