PSC, PSI hold three-day seminar and workshop for new athletes’ identification system
Coaches from various Local Government Units (LGUs) and from the Department of Education (DepEd) Regions 6, 7 and 8 converged at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) yesterday for the three-day Smart ID system seminar and workshop organized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Sports Institute (PSI).
University of Santo Tomas (UST) professor for Sports Science Josephine Joy Reyes and her team facilitated the seminar.
So what is the Smart ID system?
PSC Commissioner for Visayas Ramon “El Presidente” Fernandez explained the importance of the ID system.
According to the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) legend, the Smart ID system’s main purpose is to create a database wherein the attributes of the young athletes’ aged 8 to 12 years old will be recorded.
The database will give not just coaches but the PSC and PSI an overview of the athletes’ profiles and determine what appropriate sport that athlete should be developed in.
Although the Smart ID system already existed many years ago, Fernandez said its presence was not felt in the Visayas and Mindanao area since the PSC administration during that time did not bother to widen their reach and implement the program in those regions.
“The Smart ID system basically identifies each young athletes’ attributes through a database recorded by coaches from both LGU’s and DepEd. This database will be used to determine what sport that athlete should be playing. This database of the Smart ID system will also be used to monitor the development and progress of the athlete,” Fernandez said.
This is the second time Cebu City hosted a seminar about the Smart ID system. The first time was August last year a few months after the PSI was established.
On the final day of the seminar on Thursday, the participating coaches will have a dry-run on how to record the attributes from around 60 athletes who will be competing in the upcoming Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) meet. Coaches will be tasked to record athletes’ attributes like speed, agility, endurance, leaping ability, and other necessary qualities needed to identify their strengths.
Fernandez said that with the Smart ID system, it will be easier for them to identify athletes who have the potential to excel in their respective sports. It will also be easy for them to develop and recommend these athletes to respective National Sports Associations (NSAs) for future stints in international meets.
One of the PSC’s plans is to establish regional centers around the country that will have their own Smart ID system database so that athletes won’t have to go to Manila to verify their records there.
“It’s about time for us to change the profile or manual in our sports system because it’s obsolete already. We have to create a new database and you who are here will be instrumental in that change,” Reyes said.
