Village waste segregation compliance at 40 percent

OVER 1,000 households were issued citation tickets for violating the “no segregation, no collection” policy on garbage since it was enforced on March 1, the City’s Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) said.

Acting CENRO chief Nida Cabrera also said about 40 percent of the 80 barangays in Cebu City complied with the policy with the other 60 percent unable to do so.

“It’s hard to expect 100 percent compliance on the segregation policy due to public mindset, they are not used to it. I hope this time, our barangays won’t stop in helping implement the policy,” acting CENRO chief Nida Cabrera said.

The Barangay Environmental Officers (BEO) visited each household to check if they had segregated receptacles for biodegradable, non-biodegradable and recyclable waste.

Cabrera said this week, they started issuing citations to households who don’t have proper garbage receptacles.

Last year, she said they apprehended 13,000 violators and filed 1,000 cases for four-time violators, she said.

First time offenders are fined P500, followed by P1,000 for the second offense and P3,000 for the third offense.

Cabrera said there are barangays like Barangay Pulangbato and Pit-os in the north district and Barangay Pasil and San Nicholas in the south that are doing joint garbage collections.
