P5 million for winning LGU in Philippine Nat’l Games

A whopping P5 million cash assistance awaits the local government unit that will have the most gold medals in the upcoming Philippine National Games (PNG) that will be held in Cebu City on May 19 to 26.

This was revealed by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioner for the Visayas Ramon “El Presidente” Fernandez in an interview with Cebu Daily News last Tuesday.

Fernandez said the PSC put up huge cash prizes to encourage LGUs to come up with a strong grassroots program. He added that it would be better to give the cash assistance to LGUs rather than the National Sporting Associations.

The open multi-sporting meet also serves as a talent-identification competition for those who want to qualify for the national team. It will be LGU-based and it will be held in Cebu City for the first time in 21 years.

The LGU will choose the athletes who will compete in this meet and will also spend for their representatives.

The second placer will receive P4 million, the third placer gets P3 million, P2 million goes to the fourth placer while the fifth placer will still get P1 million.

Other representatives from Cebu include Mandaue City and Cebu Province.

PSC initially shelled out a P61-million budget for the PNG not including the cash assistance for the winning LGUs.

The weeklong event is expected to gather 8,500 athletes from more than 150 LGUs.
