I was recently invited by hypermarket chain, Shopwise, to deliver a talk on “How to be a Wise Mom” in line with their Thanksgiving Day party for top Wise Card members.
After giving some tips on efficient grocery shopping — which you can read in my blog on Monday (June 11) — I shared a story entitled “Tight Times” which was written by Jeanette Patindol and illustrated by Sergio Bumatay III.
This story was written from the point of view of a child whose family was experiencing “tight times” as their father, the family’s breadwinner, lost his job.
The child narrated how they have less of everything: less eggs to eat, less chocolate powder to make for chocolate drink, less places to go for recreation.
The story takes on a grateful tone that inspires readers to count blessings instead of enumerating what is lacking.
This was the central theme to my sharing last June 2. We should never forget to be thankful for what we have.
Somewhere in this planet there is someone who has more of what we have and there is someone who has less of what we have.
There is no point of comparing yourself to anyone.
No matter what stage or level in financial standing we are in, we need to espouse an attitude of gratitude.

As we utter our “thank yous” for all the blessings we receive, let me also invite you to the initiative of Rotaract Club of Cebu South (sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cebu South) for a drink-for-a-cause event on June 15 at La Vie Parisienne for the benefit of the “Agak a Badjao” project.
I attended this event last year with my JENESYS (Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths) batchmate Ador Hurtado.
It rained so hard that the plan to have an outdoor fashion show of the original creations of designer Griffins Malazarte had to be shelved.
But the night went on with lots of stories to share.
The rainy night was also a message that more blessings are coming as the group continue on with their efforts to build a school building for the benefit of the Badjao children in Mambaling, Cebu.
This year, tickets are sold at P399 for unlimited wine and cheese from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Check out their Facebook event page “Wine Night Stand” for details on reservation.
