A goal by Basti Badayos in the second five-minute extension made the trip worthwhile for Bohol-based Gaher FC, as it hoisted the championship trophy of the 3rd Sacred Heart School (SHS)-Ateneo de Cebu Invitational 11-a-side Football Championships.

The visiting team bagged the crown after it edged the Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC) Savio, 1-0, yesterday at the Ateneo campus in Canduman, Mandaue City.

Badayos, who was quick on his feet, scored on a one-on-one encounter and was named as the Most Valuable Player of the match following his heroics. He was also named the Best Midfielder. His teammate, Procopio Bacalos, bagged the Best Defender award.

Aside from the runner-up honors, DBTC Savio had three of its booters bringing home special awards.

John Michael Candongo was named as the Best Goalkeeper, Andres Custado was the Best Striker while Vaughn Pacaña received the Golden Boot Award.

JL Cascara of Cagayan de Oro’s Rosevale FC was named as the Best Winger.

Enroute to the title, Gaher FC routed the University of San Carlos Basic Education, 5-1, in the quarterfinals, then outsmarted Rosevale FC, 3-1, in the semifinals.

DBTC Savio thrashed Abellana National School Pomeroy, 4-0, to claim its semifinals ticket. It then went on to streak past Ateneo, 2-1, to advance to the finals.

Rosevale FC made its trip to Cebu worthwhile by bringing back the third place trophy after a 1-0 outclassing of Ateneo.

The winners received a specially designed wooden trophy courtesy of Ronea Bagabuyo of Dapitan, a close friend of tournament organizer Engr. Nilo Ferraren. Bagabuyo has been doing the trophies since the first edition of this tournament.

Each member of the winning team as well as the special awardees also received an eagle-designed medal for their efforts on the pitch.
